Perched on a hilltop about 1,500 ft. above the sea below in the Alpes-Maritimes department of southeastern France, Èze is as charming as a village can be. Nestled in the rugged mountainous region between Nice and Monaco, it's just a few minutes' drive from either one. And a spectacular drive at that!
I've wanted to visit Èze for many years and this visit was a dream come true.
Earliest records indicate that Èze was populated in the 3rd century BCE. The Romans and Moors called Èze home for a few centuries and the Turks seized it in the 17th century. Fast forward to 1860, the citizens of Èze unanimously declared it part of France.
It's easy to lose yourself in its narrow, winding lanes.
Be sure to save time to visit one of the many shops and art galleries in the village.
The early summer colors were stunning.
The little church, Notre-Dame-de-l'Assomption is perched literally at the edge of the village. Built in the neo-classical style in the 18th century on the site of a 12th century church, it provides a commanding view as you approach the village.
Its relatively plain exterior belies the beautiful baroque interior.
I just loved the tower and its blue dial. With its prominent location above the village, it's not hard to believe that it's been struck by lightening several times.
Jardin Exotique
Continue to climb and you'll find yourself in the Jardin Exotique (Exotic Garden), You wind through a maze of beautiful succulents with stunning views of the Mediterranean Sea below.
This beautiful statue of a woman by French sculpture Jean-Philippe Richard graces the garden.
Even the trash cans are artistic!
I can't resist old and unique doors and Èze didn't disappoint!
What made this trip even more special was that my granddaughter was with me!

Plan to get there early. We visited in early summer and arrived around mid-morning. By the time we left a few hours later it was packed. Your visit will be much more enjoyable without having to fight the crowds.
Be prepared for steps; lots of steps, and wear comfortable shoes!
Although we didn't stop to eat, there are several cafés and restaurants in the village.
There are several ways to reach Èze; rental car, train or bus. I love taking trains in Europe, however the stop for Èze is along the sea below the village which requires even more steps. We also considered renting a car for a couple of days, but parking lots near these hilltop villages are small and fill up quickly so we hired a driver which was worry free and the best decision for us.
There is a fee to visit the Jardin Exotique (7 Euros when we visited). It's well worth it; the garden is gorgeous as are the views of the sea below.
